Obituary

John M. Franchuk passed away February 23, 2018, after a long illness. The son of Louis and Mary Franchuk, he was born October 16, 1940, in Dickinson, North Dakota, and spent his early years working on the family farm. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1958 and served 4 years. He used the GI Bill to help pay tuition at North Dakota State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. It was there he met his wife Rachael; they were married on August 16, 1966. John spent his career working on heavy machinery, including undersea cabling systems and oil well drilling systems; his knowledge and expertise led to worldwide travel and consulting work. John retired in 2005 and moved from California to Bend, Oregon. He was an avid do-it-yourselfer and did extensive home renovations. When not working on his homes, he volunteered time with Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in April. He was always very interested in hiking and was active in the Mountaineers. John climbed many notable mountains in the Northwest, including Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and before the 1980 eruption, Mt. St. Helens. He also introduced many people and Boy Scouts to hiking, including his two Eagle Scout sons, in whom he was very proud. After his retirement and move to Bend, he became an avid supporter of Pilot Butte and spent most days either climbing it, doing trail repair, removing invasive weeds or watering planted trees. He will be greatly missed. John was preceded in death by his parents and younger siblings MaryAnn and Charles Franchuk. His is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rachael and his children, Steven, Christopher and Jennifer Franchuk.
