April 26, 1931- May 21, 2017

Kent Ronald Smith, M.D. was born to Kent V. Smith and Louise M. Croy in San Francisco, California. Early years were spent between Spokane, Washington and Portland, Oregon. He finished his senior year at Reed College while also completing a first year in Medical School at OHSU. The residency in Internal Medicine was followed by Public Health Service doing research in heart and lung disease through a program at USC and performed at Los Angeles County General. The study included the effects of smog on the heart and lungs and as well as clinical studies for MMR (measles, mumps and rubella).

With his wife, Ann, and children, Marti, Kathi, Sherri and Kent, he returned to Oregon to practice Internal Medicine in the Beaverton Medical Clinic for many years. Kent served on the staff of three hospitals, St. Vincent, Good Samaritan and Tuality and was a member of the Oregon Medical Association and past president of the Washington County Medical Society, as well as an instructor training medical students to read x-rays at the VA in Portland. He volunteered for Outside In, helping drug addicts in the early 60's.

Kent began a second career as an artist, working in wood. His woodcarvings, sculptures and furniture were shown in many galleries and art shows in Portland, Oregon, Sun Valley and Elkhorn, Idaho, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Mirror Pond Gallery in Bend, Oregon. He was a past member of the Contemporary Arts Council.

After retirement, he worked for the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River, Oregon, the Independent Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Bookmark bookstore in Bend.

Kent is survived by his second wife of 45 years, Janice Bartlow Smith; daughters, Kathi Smith-Bolle (Bob) Bend, Sherri Smith, Los Angeles, Audrey Smith of Bend; brother, David (Marilyn) Smith of Portland, Oregon; 6 grandchildren, Wendi McClaren, Anthony McClaren, Laura Crabtree, Stefani Crabtree, Nathan Crabtree, and Siddhartha Archer.
