Obituary

Lyle Eugene Barker, age 74, passed away unexpectedly at his home in La Pine, Oregon, on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 of natural causes due to complications of diabetes.

Born March 13, 1943, in Yakima, Washington, to Agnes and Ben Barker. At the age of 4, he moved with his parents to Vernonia, Oregon where he attended the Vernonia schools graduating from Vernonia High School in 1961. Lyle served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant E4. On October 1, 1967, he married Carolyn “Carol” Sue Lyda in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Lyle resided in Vernonia until 2005. He and Carolyn moved to La Pine, Oregon after he retired from Georgia Pacific Wauna Mill, working 18 years as a Machine Operator.

During his time in Vernonia he was an active member of the Vernonia Volunteer Fire Department, Vernonia Rural Fire Board, Vernonia Police Department Reserves and the Vernonia Ambulance, serving several years as an officer, a fireman, and fire chief. While devoting 40 years of volunteer service to his community he received several awards, including Citizen of the Year in 1990, and was instrumental in securing the funding for the construction of the fire department building, still being used today.

While attending high school he worked at Sam's Food Store. Then in 1965 he was drafted into the US Army, serving his 'stint' in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge in March 1967 he went to work for Olympic Forest Products in Mist, Oregon, before starting his 20-year career as a logger for both Serafin Logging and Sword Logging in Vernonia. In 1987, he went to work at the paper mill at Wauna.

Lyle enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, camping and outdoor activities. He was an avid wood worker making several pieces of oak furniture that are cherished by his close friends and family. He spent evenings playing card and board games with friends and family through the years, his most recent favorite being dominos.

He will be especially remembered for his 'tell it like it is' advice, his gruff exterior but tender heart and his willingness to help anyone who was in need.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years; daughter Carlene (husband Dave) Bales; son Steven Barker; and two grandchildren, Kendra and Austin Barker. He is also survived by 'honorary' son Steve (wife Pam) Weller. Lyle leaves behind several cousins, nieces, nephews and many cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Henry Rassmussen, Earle Rassmussen and Dorothy Watkins.

At his request no services will be held.
