Obituary

Bonnie McNeil, dearly loved matriarch of her family, was multifaceted and multi-talented.
Sister to Georgia. They grew up in a household filled with literature, from a father who taught Shakespeare to a mother who taught English and wrote poetry. It is no surprise that both sisters grew up to be children’s librarians and storytellers.
Army wife to her beloved Robert James McNeil. They were best friends, united partners, constant lovers. She accompanied him around the world, and they always found happiness in each other.
Mother. Just ask Rod and Heather and they’ll say, “We had the best mother in the world.” She was always proud of her children, and would do anything to assure their happiness and success.
Grandmother/Great-grandmother. Her legacy lives on with Dana, Chris, Amelia, Robert, Everett, Jessica, Ryan, and Jamie Rose. They admired and loved their “Mara,” and always will.
Actress. Tovarich. Glass Menagerie. Antigone. The Tempest. These are just a few of the many plays she performed in, almost always with the lead role. She may have been petite in size, but on stage she was a giant.
Storyteller. She performed at conferences, libraries, and schools, enchanting listeners of all ages with literary stories and folk tales from Ireland to Appalachia.
Friend. Anyone who knew Bonnie knew her smile, her sparkling blue eyes, her optimistic outlook on life, and her kindness. From baking and delivering brownies to writing letters in her beautiful script, she always let her friends and family know how much they meant to her.

A private family service will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD, where she will be laid to rest with her late husband, Colonel Robert McNeil.
