Don was born in Gary, IN and grew up in Peru, IN. He graduated from Peru Indiana Senior High School in 1947 and moved to Chicago to attend Chicago University. He was drafted into the US Army and served in the Korean War in the 1st Field Artillery Observation Battalion.
After his service, he moved to California and attended San Jose State University from 1955-1958, graduating with a degree in Geology. He married San Jose native Shirley Joyce Osterman in 1958. He did graduate work in geophysics at Stanford University and began work with the U.S. Geological Survey. In 1961, he joined Lockheed Martin Space Systems and remained with the company until his retirement in 1995.
He taught computer programming languages part-time at both Cañada and De Anza Colleges. His first wife passed in 1980 and he married his second wife Barbara Jill Crabtree in 1984. Don was a devoted father, a passionate nature lover, avid skier and backpacker, active Sierra Club member, accomplished photographer, private pilot, ham radio enthusiast and volunteer with San Jose Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service. Don is survived by his wife Barbara "Jill", daughters Marcia Trask and Elizabeth Trask, niece June Trask, and in-laws Gayle and Richard Knoetzsch. No services are scheduled at this time.
