Fred Carl Thomason
June 23, 1935 - Aug. 25, 2019

Fred Carl Thomason, of La Pine, passed away in Bend on August 25, 2019. He was 84.

Fred was born June 23, 1935 in Oklahoma City, Okla. but the family moved to Napa, Calif. when Fred was 3. He attended school briefly before going to work on the ranch to help his family. Fred joined the US Army in 1955 and served honorably during the Korean War. Following his service, he returned to Napa where he began what would be a 30-year career as an iron worker for Kaiser Steel. On retiring, he was given an award for having only used 3 sick days in 30 years. While working steel during the day, Fred would come home and work on the family ranch at night. He married Mary Rollins on Nov. 20, 1959. They retired to La Pine in 1994. Mary preceded Fred in death on Feb. 12, 2013. He later married Jeannie Kawamoto in La Pine on April 4, 2018.

Fred loved the outdoors. Whether he was hunting, fishing, working the ranch or with wood, he loved spending time in nature - including his years of work on the ranch. Although he didn’t have a formal education, Fred was very smart and taught his kids and grandkids lessons of life not learned in school. He was also a member and past governor in the Moose Lodge. Fred was baptized in the Deschutes River in 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannie Thomason of La Pine; sons, Jody Thomason of Napa, Calif. and Tom Thomason of Grants Pass, Ore.; daughters, Betty Bateman of Napa, Calif., Jackie Stanley and her husband Michael, of Longview, Wash., Lynette Thomason of Madras, Ore.; eleven grandchildren, seventeen grandchildren; brothers, Diamond, Curt, Troy, Bob, Luan, and Ed Thomason, sister, Chris “Hopper”.
