November 28, 1988 - September 10, 2018
Born in Bend, Oregon
Resided in Bend, Oregon

James Michael Rausch was born into this world November 28, 1988 on a Monday morning.
When James was 3 ½ months old he was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, and Bend being the small
town that it was back then had very few resources for cancer treatments let alone for infants. James and
his grandmother and I lived in Portland for 6 weeks during his 28 treatments. When he was 3 years old
he was declared stable, with no new tumors in his eyes.

James was a quiet child, but when he spoke up, he would speak up. James attended Elk Meadow,
Cascade Middle School and Summit High School. After High School Graduation in 2007 he attended COCC and their Automotive program and during this time he worked at Sears in their Automotive Department. After Sears closed it was hard to find work in Bend. He and his brother left in December of 2009 to go to WyoTech in Laramie, Wyoming- an automotive training school. While at WyoTech he noticed a growth on his right temple. A biopsy showed that it was Soft Tissue Sarcoma, and the next chapter of his life began. James came home May 2010 and had his first surgery followed by chemotherapy.

He returned to WyoTech April 2011 for the Spring session to continue his schooling. August 2011, we found out that his cancer had metastasized to his lungs. We were with him, so we packed his things and brought him home for his next surgery and his ongoing treatment. James had several surgeries, the first one in Colorado and then we chose to transfer his care to Portland’s OHSU and St. Charles Cancer Center to be closer to our home. With the doctors, nurses and staff, we will always be grateful for their time and loving care of James. As we feel the great sorrow for our loss of James physical presence here, we also celebrate his deliverance from the pain and the continued road of well intentioned, but unsuccessful treatments he
was travelling. His motto was always “I WON”, and yes James won this one too! In lieu of flowers please send Memorial Contributions to: St. Francis Historic Catholic Church; 2450 NE 27th Street; Bend, OR 97701.
