James Whitcomb Brougher III (Jim) passed away July 24, 2019. He was born November 14, 1932 in Los Angeles, CA, the son of James Whitcomb Brougher Jr. and Helen Ball Brougher. Jim grew up in Glendale, CA, and graduated from Hoover High School. He attended Oregon State College earning a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Food Tech. He married Janet Van Saun (Jan), the love of his life, in 1954.

An Army ROTC obligation called for his serving a year and a half in Korea before beginning his business career in sales with Burroughs Corporation in Portland, OR. Feeling that wasn’t his niche, he moved on to a sales position with Packwell Paper Co. where he could use his natural talents in designing and selling packaging to stores and businesses. His success prompted a transfer to Boulder, CO, where he covered six states. A desire to return to the West Coast led to his becoming a co-owner of newly-formed Conifer Paper Products Co. in Berkeley, CA. He hired and developed close relationships with an ever-expanding and successful sales staff. The company was sold and he retired in 1997.

He was an active and involved father with his 3 children - stimulating their interest in nature and an active life style with backpacking, skiing, bicycling, hiking, sailing, and abalone diving. Jim’s favorite sport was windsurfing. Some highlights of his life were: summiting Mt Shasta with son, Randy, going to the top of Mt Whitney with Jan, hiking the Tour de Mt Blanc in the Alps and the week-long charity bike trips with Cycle Oregon. He loved his own family and his extended family and organized family reunions for many years on the coast of Oregon for up to 30 family members. He will be greatly missed - especially by his wife, Jan, who was his partner in participation in all his sports activities.

Jim used his design skills in his personal life by designing and building a rustic lodge-style home at Lake Tahoe, CA - a base for summer fun and an off-the-grid vacation place in Baja, Mexico, with a thatched roof casita house and glorious garden where he enjoyed hosting visits from friends and family.

Jim is survived by his wife Jan, his daughter Cindy Zalunardo, his son Randy Brougher, his sisters Betty Dieudonne and Linda Brougher, his brother Frank Brougher and four grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a son, James Whitcomb Brougher IV in 2013.

Jim was a happy, optimistic person with always a ready smile and an open and trusting nature and in tune with his inner child. He died at home peacefully, with dignity, surrounded by his family.
