Obituary

Marden (Mardy) Eric Smith, 75, of La Pine, OR, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at his home following a valiant battle with cancer. He was born on September 18, 1944 in Monterey Park, CA, to Melvin Thomas Smith and Nita Laura (Cheney) and moved with his family to Aumsville, OR very shortly after his birth. Mardy graduated from Gresham High School in 1962, then went on to serve in the United States Navy as a radio operator stationed at Midway. Upon fulfilling his commitment to the Navy, he attended Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) in Klamath Falls, OR and received his bachelor’s degree in Engineering while working as a lineman for US West Communications (Ma Bell). He met and married Mary Jayne Thompson on August 5, 1967, and together they parented three children, two daughters and a son. They moved to Aloha, OR to raise their family while Mardy continued employment with Ma Bell. Upon retiring from the phone company after 20 years of service, Mardy completed a full second career as a Network Operations Engineer for McCaw Communications (AT&T Wireless Services) before retiring for a second time in 2004. Upon this retirement, Mardy moved to La Pine, OR and has always held this area as a favorite place for his love of fishing, outdoors, and wilderness and celebrated 40 years of marriage prior to Mary’s passing in 2007. Upon finding love again, Mardy married Phyllis Jean (Powell) of La Pine, OR on November 9, 2012, and continued to celebrate retirement with her by his side. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mardy found tremendous fulfillment in pursuing family history and tracing ancestral roots. He had significant talent and skill for this endeavor and in retirement researched ancestry for countless families while teaching others how to do the same. Despite his interests in technology, fishing, and family history, Mardy’s most treasured moments came through being a husband, father, grandfather, and mentor. Mardy is survived by his wife Phyllis of La Pine; daughters Kolette Reese (Ralph) from Beaverton, OR and Dawne Rushkarski (Martin) from Monroe, WA; son Kent Smith (Arlene Gelbolingo) from Forest Grove, OR; two brothers Ronald Smith from SLC, UT and Ray Smith (Dale) from San Antonio, FL; sister Carol Flower (Lawrence) from Price, UT; 3 grandchildren Jasmine Smith and Sebastian Smith from Forest Grove, OR and Alexander Rushkarski from Monroe, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, a brother, a sister-in-law, and a brother-in-law.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in La Pine, OR on Friday, November 15 at 10am followed by a luncheon. Burial services will be forthcoming.
